On 14 June 2020 a young Bollywood actor, Sushant Singh Rajput, who was only 34 years committed suicide by hanging himself. This has got everyone in a frenzy wondering why the actor did so. People have allegedly stated that he suffered from clinical depression because of professional rivalry and nepotism in the film industry. However, there is no concrete answer as to why he took this drastic step.

Nepotism in the film industry

Sushant Singh Rajput’s death has put nepotism under the spotlight. Sushant Singh Rajput lost 7 films in 6 months after Chhichhore. Reports suggest that he was being replaced in movies because of nepotism. What is nepotism? Nepotism is the unfair use of power in order to get jobs or other benefits for your family or friends. Kangana Ranaut slammed the nepotism and hypocrisy surrounding the film industry. She questioned why his movies were not acknowledged at award shows and even states that the only mistake Sushant made was believing those who called him worthless. Kangana Ranaut spoke about nepotism in the industry and how people that don’t have godfathers in the industry were treated unfairly and don’t get what they deserve.

Why suicide?

When someone is suffering from a serious mental illness, their thoughts are clouded and their actions seem like their only way out. Mental health is all about how people think, feel, and behave. Today mental health has become a big issue that leads to people taking harsh decisions such a committing suicide, not eating etc.. Awareness to depression, anxiety and other such mental illnesses are vital, especially in a country like India where therapy is thought of as something bad. Therapy can help people who suffer from these diseases. Mental health is a problem that shouldn’t be overlooked!
