Juventus take command of Serie A title challenge
Juventus increased their lead to 7 points over Lazio at the top of the table following their 4-1 win over struggling, Torino. They also received help from longstanding rivals, AC Milan who beat Lazio 3-0 this weekend.
Juve fans would call this a perfect weekend as their high-profile signing, Cristiano Ronaldo, netted his first free-kick goal for the Bianconeri. Ronaldo took his tally to 25 league goals this season, becoming the first Juve player to do so in 60 years. However, he still sits 4 goals behind top scorer, Ciro Immobile, who is set to miss his team’s next game. The battle for the championship is far from over with Lazio and Juve yet to face each other at the Allianz stadium in the coming weeks. The mettle of the Turin based side will be tested in the next few games as they travel to Milan and host Atalanta this week.
Man City tear Liverpool apart
Manchester City ripped the uncharacteristically poor Liverpool defence to shreds, beating them 4-0. The Liverpool outfit came off the back of being crowned premier league champions, they even received a guard of honour from Pep Guardiola and co, right before being completely smashed in an inspired performance by the blues. Man City ran rampant putting 4 into Allison’s net, with the midfield pairing of Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden playing an influential role in city’s impressive performance. Man City was already 3 up at a half time before an Oxlade-Chamberlain own goal extended their lead after which substitute, Riyad Mahrez had a goal taken off for offside. Many believe that the Liverpool players may have been still in the celebration mode and may have not completely switched on for the occasion. This may not have an impact on this season’s league standings, but surely sets the tone for the next season with the city set to come out all guns blazing, in their attempt to regain the championship from Klopp’s team.
