Our very own prime minister, Narendra Modi, has really sped up the process of hiring people, not just for the people in India but migrants too.
The government asked public and private businesses to not cut peoples salaries or lay them off during this pandemic on the 24th of march. While trying this idea, many workers were disposed off of after emerging with symptoms of the disease. They were relieved without pay and continued to stick to letting workers work despite conditions in India becoming worse and more dangerous.
On the 18th of June, the government decided to enforce this plan completely. They fast-tracked the national employment policy which aims at providing almost 500 million including migrants with jobs and social security to help increase the country’s economic growth and to get out of this long-lasting recession.
The labour minister, Santosh Gangwar, asked officials to revamp employment policy afresh, keeping in mind the adversities being thrown at the people by the virus. This somewhat gives us a sense of relief that the government is also trying to keep our workforce safe and protected, although it has not been established whether or not the safety being provided is safe sufficient.
The NEP will have the objectives of creating an enabling environment for attracting new businesses and industries to create employment opportunities while improving the skill sets of the existing workforce to make it employable.
Our future now lays in the hands of our Government and we are not sure what to expect out of this unseemly and risky scheme.
