Dr Charles DeWitt Watts (1917-2004):

Dr Charles DeWitt Watts spent more than 50 some years advocating for civil and human rights in America. His dedication and commitment to bringing quality of medical care for all residents of North Carolina, especially the poor and underserved makes him one of the most exceptional candidates for this write up and appreciation.

Not only did this gentlemen break racial barriers but he pushed for the certification of black medical students as he sought to eliminate the prejudice and stereotypes against black men women and children simply for the colour of their skin.

As a respected and well-educated man, he also was the first African American to be certified by a surgical speciality board in North Carolina and he played a vital role in founding Lincoln Community Health Center, a free-standing clinic, which served people regardless of their ability to pay or their race and ethnicity. As a world-class citizen, loving coworker and father Dr.Watts was one of the many people that changed the face of medicine today and should always be remembered for his work as a member of the National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine, and work in in the American College of Surgeons, as an active participant in the National Medical Association.
