The new education system in India has been divided into 4 parts:
The foundation stage which will have three pre-primary grades and grades 1&2, the focus will be on developing personality, skills and teamwork spirit
The preparatory stage will consist of grades 3-5, where formal classroom learning will be introduced. There will be great emphasis on three languages to be learnt, including mother tongue and Sanskrit.
Middle stage- grades 6-8 where students will be introduced to more subjects
High school- grades 9-12 will be able to choose subjects according to their likes and dislikes. There will no longer be Science, Commerce or Arts
In addition, there will be an introduction of 10 bagless days and there will be great emphasis on vocational learning. A new National Assessment Centre, PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development), will be set up as a standards-setting body.
Any bachelor’s degree will be a minimum of four years. The policy aims at breaking disciplinary barriers. Institutions, including the IITs, will become multi-disciplinary; degrees will have more flexibility, and students will get more choice in terms of subjects. Graduation can be in three or four years with multiple exit options and appropriate certification. For example, a certificate after 1 year, advanced diploma after 2 years, Bachelor’s Degree after 3 years and Bachelor’s degree with Research after 4 years.
