Are you confused about which new console to buy? We've got you! Here's everything that's been revealed about these consoles, side-by-side.
Design
PlayStation and Xbox have always been criticized for their traditional design of a black box being overused. Well, this year Playstation had redesigned their console, giving it a more futuristic look and changing its colours to black and white rather than just black. Xbox, however, has decided to stick with the original design. Additionally, the PS5 is going to be the largest console ever revealed.
CPU, GPU AND STORAGE
When it comes to raw power the Xbox is the more powerful system but do note that those are just theoretical numbers and do not represent how a game will run on a particular system.
Both PS5 and Xbox use a custom AMD ZEN 2 CPU chip, both systems have 8 cores with the PS5 using 3.5GHZ(Variable) while the Xbox uses 3.8GHZ(Static). Both systems make use of custom RDNA 2 chips for their GPU’S with the Xbox having 52 Compute units at 1.825 GHZ(static) while the ps5 has 36 Compute units at 2.25 GHZ(Variable)
The Xbox is making use of static clock speeds which means that the system will be running at full power all the time. On the other hand, the PS5 has a unique approach this generation, making use of variable clock speeds, the system will only use the amount of power needed to run a specific game. Variable clock speeds will reduce the amount of power being used which in turn will keep the system cool. So while the PS5 is the more efficient console, the Xbox is supposedly more powerful on paper.
SSD’s are replacing HDD’s and this can also be seen in the consoles. SSD’s are
much faster and make developing games easier. Xbox is using the standard approach to an SSD which runs 2.4 GB/s, Sony is using a custom SSD which runs at 5.5 GB/s. Sony will be providing 825 GB on their SSD and Xbox will be giving 1Tb with expandable storage being sold separately. For Sony, this is a bit more complicated as they do offer expandable storage but no SSD at the moment of writing this article can reach the speed of Sony’s SSD thus it will not be able to make use of the consoles true potential.
Backwards compatibility
Xbox as always has been more user friendly and that trend continues this generation as well. The series X will be backwards compatible with most of the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and several Xbox games. There will be over 3000 games to play at launch because of this.
Sony has recently been embracing this culture as well with the PS5 supporting almost every Ps4 game. Both studios have given developers the freedom to allow users to have an updated copy of the game on next-gen consoles for free if they have previously purchased the game for older generation consoles.
Controllers
Once again Xbox has stuck to their traditional usual design with noticeable changes being made to the D-Pad with it being more circular and comfortable to use. Sony has redesigned its entire controller, making it look like the series x controller yet retaining the properties of what has made the dual shock so great over these years. The new grip is said to be more comfortable for long sessions. Rumble has significantly improved, the trigger buttons make use of a new feature that Sony calls ‘Adaptive triggers’, these 2 new improvements to the controllers will help make a noticeable difference to gameplay. Users can now feel the difference from driving on a rocky road compared to a smooth or icy path. You can even feel the tension in the controller while aiming with a bow compared to a gun
