In a time of dismay and isolation, the only things that can keep us entertained were sports and shows. However, most sports across the globe have been called off.
Basketball players suffrage
Basketball has suffered enormously due to the pandemic. It was disheartening for all the eager basketball fans to see the matches get cancelled across the globe: Africa cancelled its Basketball Africa League, while Europe cancelled the Basketball Champions League and FIBA Europe Cup.
Basketball players have suffered enormously financially and with their health. Since most of the tournaments have been cancelled off and it is unlikely for them to begin any time soon, due to the restriction of mass gatherings in most countries, there is no income for basketball players. Even in the future, it is unlikely they get the same amount of money as they currently are. The NBA and National Basketball Players Association also reached an agreement to reduce the compensation pay for players by 25%.
In addition, all their sponsors are having a difficult time and it is unlikely for them to offer the same amount of sponsorship as before. Basketball players could suffer partial remission due to this sudden change in their lives that disenables them from maintaining their fit form.
Effects of COVID
Basketball has been greatly affected as many players have tested positive since the beginning of the coronavirus starting with the Brooklyn Nets team and going onto other teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers. This is due to touching the same surface of the basketball leading to its rapid spread amongst basketball players. In conditions like these, it is unlikely for the game to be given permission to recommence anytime soon and rejuvenate our lives.
