Review: Despite being made 12 years ago, Breaking Bad is still one of the best TV shows out there. With outstanding acting by the cast, brilliant directing and fantastic writing, the development of each character is so deep, rich and detailed that the show is truly a masterpiece. While the show may not be for all audiences, it does take you on an in-depth journey into the methamphetamine business and how a high school chemistry teacher becomes one of the biggest drug lords America has ever seen. Additionally, Breaking Bad has received a lot of fame for gathering a lot of fan theories and speculation because of its very large variety of possible interpretations of the plots and characters. It’ll make you question everything right until the finale! With loads of drama, action, manipulation and chemistry, these 5 seasons are sure to make you pay more attention in your Chemistry class!
2. Designated Survivor (2016)
Genre: Action, Politics, Thriller
Description: On the night of the annual State of the Union speech, an explosion destroys the Capitol Building, killing the President and everyone in the line of succession except for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Thomas Kirkman, who had been named the designated survivor. Kirkman is immediately sworn in, unaware that the attack is just the beginning of what is to come.
Review: Political thrillers are definitely an acquired taste but Designated Survivor does an outstanding job to get you addicted to them. With America in distress and turmoil, they turn to a low-ranking government official to run the world’s largest superpower. With 3 seasons of gripping drama, intense action, raw politics and a conspiracy so big that goes so deep into the U.S government, that no one in Washington can be trusted. The third season does have a drop-in quality as far as entertainment and drama go, as compared to the previous two seasons. However, this is because the third season focuses more on the politics of getting America back to its original state whereas as the first two seasons were more thrilling, intense and action-centric as they were still trying to uncover the conspiracy and find the traitors. If you’re a conspiracy nut like many others (myself included) or you simply like a good old fashioned American political drama, this is a definite must-watch.
3. Two and a Half Men (2003)
Genre: Sitcom
Description: Charlie Harper is a jingle writer who leads a drunken, carefree life. Everything changes when his recently divorced and broke brother, Alan, and 10-year-old nephew, Jake, move into his Malibu beach house.
Review: Undoubtedly one of the most famous sitcoms of all times, Two and a Half Men does not disappoint. With 12 seasons of non–stop jokes, failed marriages, drunken adventures, girls, drinking and money in a Malibu beach house with 2 adults, 1 kid and no grown-ups. The show has everything you need from a good sitcom: a rich drunk, he’s divorced, broke brother, the brother’s immature, “special” child, a mean housekeeper, the brothers annoyed ex-wife and a bad mother. The show covers the hilarious interactions of all these characters, the trouble they get into and how their relationships develop over the 12 seasons. Through the evolution of the show, the characters and plot have been developed and written so well that by the end of the show, we feel as though we lose a personal connection. Luckily for us, we can re-watch 2 and a Half Men how many ever times we want on Netflix, and trust me, it’s going to be a lot of times. While many fans are upset about the changes that happen after Season 8, Two and a Half Men is the true definition of an original laugh out loud, revolutionary sitcom.
4. Shooter (2016)
Genre: Action
Description: Now living a quiet life, ex-Marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger agrees to help his former commander prevent the assassination of the U.S. president. However, things start to change when he is framed for the assassination and he must find the real shooter, save himself, his family, his squad and his country.
Review: While the show only spans for 3 seasons of approximately 11 episodes per season, each episode is sure to deliver a different twist each time. With an ex-marine being framed for the assassination of the president of the country he served, the show is packed with conspiracies, dark secrets, intense action, fight scenes and jaw-dropping sniper shots. It will surely keep you on edge and wanting to know what’s to come in the next episode. The plot provides a perfect balance of action, drama, thriller and emotion. Needless to say, the show also has a whole lot of violence, blood and goriness which actually makes the show that much more fun to watch. While the storyline may be a little weak in regards to believability, it does make for a very entertaining series to binge-watch because of its gripping plot and unforeseeable twists.
5. Lucifer (2016)
Genre: Action, Crime
Description: Lucifer, the fallen angel, now devil, returns from hell to vacation in Los Angeles and run a nightclub. He soon catches wind of the LAPD and assists them in solving tricky criminal cases.
Review: The series covers Lucifer’s journey and experience on Earth with humans. On Earth, Lucifer meets Detective Chloe Decker and uses his irresistible charm to help solve crimes with the LAPD as a consultant. The series has a frequent introduction of new and recurring characters like Lucifer’s brother and many more. These frequent cameos make the series far more interesting and keep it fresh and alive. Each episode covers a different case for Lucifer and Chloe to solve. The series has a very dynamically balanced storyline with loads of fun moments, sly jokes from Lucifer’s immature side, quite a few emotional moments and the right amount of action, fighting and Lucifer’s devil side. Aside from solving cases, we get to watch a whole other storyline running simultaneously covering Lucifer and Chloe’s amazing chemistry and relationship, Lucifer’s family “issues”, and many more character interactions that make the series so diverse. Definitely a must-watch if you’re looking for some nice crime, drama and action with some dark humour and fun but a very interesting plot with amazing acting and chemistry between the characters.
