The Rajya Sabha elected 62 new Members of Parliament on June 19th. Out of these only eight of them are women. However, that is not the most surprising part!
37 of them have criminal cases launched against them for heinous crimes including murder, rape, theft, attempt to murder, etc. Rajya Sabha is the upper house of India's bicameral parliament and is expected to have representatives of states with no criminal record backgrounds. It is disheartening to see that the representatives are not with clean backgrounds and despite that fact, they have been admitted to the Rajya Sabha.
Out of these new MPs, the average assets per MP is Rs.74 crores! With Mr Alla Reddy topped the chart with Rs.2,578 crores of assets. Followed by others. 82% of the 62MPs are billionaires. Our nation continues to struggle with poverty, food shortages but our respected MPs don’t take a step forward to help. It is unethical for our Rajya Sabha to have elected such MPs who have ongoing criminal cases against them. The Rajya Sabha is yet to elect other Member of Parliament in the upcoming session, hopefully, these newly elected MPs won’t have criminal records against them and we will see a slight increase in the women to men ratio in the Rajya Sabha.
